An extensive look behind the scenes of this commercial CGI integration project where digital furniture assets are seamlessly embedded into a dynamic real world environment. I was fully responsible for the entire post production pipeline, taking the raw live action plate and managing every stage of the visual effects process from initial matchmoving to the final compositing render.
Technical Workflow and Breakdown
3D Camera Tracking and Matchmoving Achieving a seamless integration started with a precise 3D camera track of the live action footage. By analyzing the parallax and geometric features of the environment, I generated a highly accurate virtual camera that perfectly mirrors the real world lens distortion, focal length, and physical movement. This ensures that the digital furniture assets maintain flawless spatial grounding and zero sliding as the camera pans across the location.
3D Asset Placement and Animation Once the camera space was solved, the digital models were strategically placed within the scene geometry. I focused on scale calibration and spatial orientation to ensure the assets naturally interact with the perspective of the surrounding architecture and streets, creating an authentic sense of volume and presence.
Advanced Compositing and Lighting Integration The final and most critical phase involved meticulous compositing to bridge the gap between CGI and reality. I rebuilt the environment lighting within the compositing stage, carefully matching the harsh daylight, ambient sky fill, and directional shadows. This process included generating accurate contact shadows where the furniture meets the pavement, soft ambient occlusion passes, and precise color grading to match the contrast, grain structure, and exposure of the original camera plate. The result is a unified, photorealistic shot where the digital and physical elements coexist perfectly.
